Whats New in VMware vSphere 5.1

This Blog post will breifly discuss all the new features that VMware vSphere as a leader virtualization platform is providing in the new release.


so in summary. here are the new features that are available with Version 5.1

1- More Larger Virtual Machine: this time VMware Has doubled he scalability of the virtual machines computing power going from 32 vCPU in 5.0 up to 64 vCPU. this is great scalability that goes beyond business critical application high up the stack to High Performance Computing. Adding to that, with the new testing that VMware has conducted in term of the number of IOPS that can be done and processed by a single VM and we reached as high as 1,000,000 IOPS instead of just 1M Per host. as of today i don’t wanna hear it that we can’t virtualize our workload.

2- Virtual Machine Format: New features enhancement there as well related to the scalability, performance counters and graphics acceleration.

3- New space efficient disks for VDI Environment: will discuss this in more details in my new blog posts but until then this is hugely beneficial since it makes use of efficient balancing between throughput and space reclamation in View Environment.

4- vSphere Distributed Switch enhancements.

  • Network Health Check: for me this is amazing, one of the biggest nightmares i had in life is when i want to check if a VLAN is allowed to pass via the physical switch. with health check this is made easy. it doesn’t only cover VLAN Check but it can also check MTU and Network adapter teaming.
  • Configuration Backup & Restore: a hugely demanded and amazing feature: this allows the administrator to always keep a consistent up to date copy of the distributed switch settings that would allow him to easily recover or rollback changes if required. also similar to snapshot concept you will be allowed to rollback changes. even if you want to replicate the same configuration on a different environment you can easily do so.
  • LACP: A technology that speak to itself. easily detect failure and automated reconfiguration.

5- Single-root I/O Virtualization Aka SR-IOV: HPC and sophisticated applications would require this functionality. you may think it is similar to Passthrough but in fact it is absolutly diifferent. in Passthrough the relationship between the physical hardware and the VM is one to one only. but in SR-IOV it is one to many.

6-  Enhanced vMotion: you use to have a requirement where you need a shared storage to move VMs between hosts. this is no longer a requirement, you can easily migrate VMs online from one host and storage disk to to another without down time. more to that you may think this is for SMB who may not be able to afford shared storage but in fact it is not. if you have shared storage you can utilize this feature as well by migrating your VMs to a different cluster that doesn’t share a common data store.

7- vSphere data protection: this is amazing, a new solution based on Avamar and its leading de-duplication technology. completely agentless VM and files backup and restore capabilities.

8- vSphere Replication: vSphere Replication enables efficient array-agnostic replication of virtual machine data over the LAN or WAN. vSphere Replication simplifies management enabling replication at the virtual machine level and enables RPOs as low as 15 minutes.

9- Zero Down Time VMware Tools Upgrade: after you upgrade to 5.1 VMware Tools. there will no longer be a requirement for reboot in subsequest version. which means the next version of vSphere will not require the VM to reboot to upgrade its virtual hardware.

10- vShield End-point: this use to be a seperate product but now included with vSphere. in my opinion this is a huge opportunity for customers to change the way they do threat security like anti-virus and spyware. this is also an opportunity for the anti-virus solution vendors to change the way they think about security now that can keep them competitive in the market.

11- vSphere Auto Deploy:  released in vSphere 5.0 with a stateless architecture. Now with 5.1 two New methods of deployment are being introduced number one is stateless caching and the other is stateful install. i will be writing more about his in my upcoming blog posts.

12- vSphere New Web Client: now it is the main administrative interface for vSphere as of 5.1. this is been one of my great features because it allows more flexible administrative option and i can use it from any where. I know Longer need to install vSphere on the machine where i need to manage my vSphere environment.

13- vCenter single sin-on server: this is great i log in once and i have the ability to administer the other instances or layers of the vCenter Environment.

14- vCenter Orchestrator: A new version of the orchestrator that has new designed workflow to help customers increase operations automation.
